Red Sox Sign Infielder Jonathan Diaz

As first reported by Baseball America and SoxProspects.com, the Boston Red Sox have inked minor league infielder Jonathan Diaz.

Diaz, 27, has spent his entire career in the Blue Jays’ system after being drafted in the 12th round by Toronto in 2006 out of North Carolina State University.

The Miami Beach, Florida native has spent parts of the last four seasons with Triple-A Las Vegas and is a career .226 minor league hitter with 12 home runs in 2,159 at-bats.

While Diaz might not provide much punch at the plate, he does draw walks, and has a career .358 on-base percentage. He also offers defensive versatility thanks to his ability to play shortstop, second base, and even third base, if needed.

Diaz has spent his off-season playing for Gigantes del Cibao of the Dominican Winter League.
