PawSox Roster Moves – August 3, 2012
Since July 25, the PawSox have lost righty-handers Brandon Duckworth and Doug Mathis to Japan, first baseman Lars Anderson to Cleveland, outfielder Scott Podsednik to Arizona, catcher Ryan Lavarnway and outfielder Ryan Kalish to Boston, and now you can add righty Garrett Mock to the list.
Here are Friday’s PawSox roster moves:
- Garrett Mock was given word after Thursday night’s loss in Lehigh Valley that he had been traded to Houston and will be reporting to Triple-A Oklahoma City. The hard-throwing reliever had a stellar month of May where he did not allow a run over nine appearances (12.0 IP), but since then had struggled. Mock, who was born in Houston and pitched for the University of Houston, had allowed at least one run in nine of his last 14 outings with the PawSox. The Red Sox will be reportedly receive ”future considerations” from the Astros in return. All the best to Garrett who, you have to think, has a good chance of being a September call-up.
Mock spent parts of 2008-10 in the Major Leagues with the Nationals. This year, he made a PawSox team-leading 35 appearances and went 3-2 with a 3.33 ERA while walking 23 and striking out 53. (Kelly O’Connor)
- With Mock gone, the void in the PawSox bullpen will be filled by hard-throwing righty, Josh Fields. Originally the 20th overall selection in the 2008 draft by Seattle, the 2008 SEC Pitcher of the Year was acquired by the Red Sox at the deadline last season with Erik Bedard in exchange for outfielders Trayvon Robinson and Chih-Hsien Chiang. Over his last 14 outings (since June 13th), Fields is 2-0, 0.37 ERA (1 ER/24.1 IP), and has allowed just six hits while walking five and striking out 30.
Prior to joining the PawSox, Fields had made nine Triple-A appearances with Tacoma in 2011 prior to being traded to the Red Sox. The 26-year-old was originally drafted in the second round in 2007 by Atlanta but did not sign. (Kelly O’Connor).
- Catcher Carson Blair has been assigned back to High-A Salem. Blair was called-up to Pawtucket for the second time following the promotion of Ryan Lavarnway to Boston. Blair did not appear in a game for the PawSox.
- Taking Blair’s spot on the roster is catcher Dan Butler from Double-A Portland. Undrafted out of the University of Arizona, Butler has a quick release and, according to Mike Antonellis, the “Voice of the Sea Dogs,” is one of the better defensive catchers Portland has seen in a long time. Over his last 19 games in Double-A, the 25-year-old was batting .302 (19-for-63) with a home run and six runs batted in. Butler played for both Yarmouth-Dennis and Brewster during the 2009 Cape Cod Baseball League season.

Daniel Bard’s 1-2-3 Inning
It was only six days ago when Daniel Bard put together an efficient 1-2-3 inning against Charlotte using 10 pitches (seven strikes) to retire the Knights in order.
However, his next two outings were anything but a model of efficiency. A combined 12 batters faced in 1 1/3 innings with five walks, a hit batter, a blown save, one wild pitch, and a total of 47 pitches (18 strikes).
In a 1-1 tie last night against Rochester, Bard’s number was called in the seventh to do something he had yet done with the PawSox: pitch in back-to-back nights. Needless to say, the Bard we saw last night was nearly a carbon copy of the one six days ago.
Bard has now made 11 appearances with the PawSox and is now 1-0 with a 6.75 ERA. (Kelly O’Connor)
The right-hander needed just 10 pitches (eight strikes) to induce three ground ball outs to the right side of the infield. Following a sacrifice fly from Che-Hsuan Lin in the bottom of the seventh, Bard was awarded his first win of the year with Pawtucket.
Joe McDonald (@ESPNJoeyMac) of ESPNBoston.com covered last night’s game and wrote a nice piece about Bard’s results:
“He turned it loose,” PawSox manager Arnie Beyeler said. “It was like, ‘Hey, I quit caring and I’m just going to throw it.’ His arm action tonight looked a little bit like we’ve seen in the past where he got away from the mechanical, robotic look and just reared back and threw the ball.”

I had a terrific time calling last night’s PawSox win with Steve Hyder, but it feels great to get the first broadcast out of the way. As I prepare for game No. 2, I’ll be taking a break from my pre-game prep for something you very well may want to join.

PawSox Notebook
- The PawSox 4-2 win over Buffalo last night marks the club’s 7th consecutive Opening Day win – the longest in franchise history.

Second baseman Pedro Ciriaco had a strong PawSox debut going 4-of-5 with two RBIs. Who cares that only one of his hits left the infield. With his speed, he doesn’t have to hit ‘em quite as deep to reach safely. By the way, he was one of only two International League batters with four hits last night (Matt Carson of Rochester also had four).
- When Steve interviewed Pedro on the field following the game, I loved it when Ciriaco said “thank you” to the fans. It might not seem like much to the players, but that kind of gesture goes a long way these days.
- One game into the season and we’ve already seen outstanding defensive plays by the two guys who get hyped the most for their defense: Jose Iglesias and Che-Hsuan Lin. Jose made an outstanding line drive catch on a ball that, off the bat, I would have told you had a 100% chance of landing in left field. Lin, meanwhile, made a catch sliding forward and on his side on a ball that seem destined to be a bloop single in shallow center. These guys will be fun to watch.
- New Pawtucket right fielder Jason Repko showed nice speed and great hustle when he reached on an RBI infield single in the 5th. I had a chance to interview him at Media Day and really enjoyed our conversation.
Around the International League
- The new “Empire State Yankees” were almost no-hit last night by Lehigh Valley. If not for a Ray Krumi double in the 7th, it would have been all zeros for the club without a home this season.
- In his Triple-A debut, arguably baseball’s top-prospect Bryce Harper went 2-of-4 with a double against Rochester.
- Speaking of the Red Wings, former PawSox first baseman Aaron Bates had a nice Opening Day for the Twins’ Triple-A club, going 2-for-3 with two walks and a run scored.
- One day into the season and we already have our first rain out (Charlotte and Norfolk), and our first extra inning game (Durham topped Gwinnett 4-3 in a 12-inning, 4:04 contest).
We hit the air tonight at 6:00 with the pre-game show. First pitch in the series finale with Buffalo is set for 6:15.

Globetrotting: China, Japan, Liverpool, and Ft. Myers
Although I strive to keep this blog nonpartisan, some people know that I’m a huge Mac user. Between my iPhone and MacBook pro, I’ve been a loyal Apple user for nearly ten years. PawSox Notebook
- It was easy to miss, but the regular season opener of the MLB season has come and gone. At around 6:00 this morning, the first pitch of the 2012 season was thrown – in Tokyo. That’s right, the Oakland Athletics were the “home” team facing off against the Seattle Mariners from the Tokyo Dome in Japan. The M’s edged the A’s in a 3-1, 11-inning affair. 44,227 of Japan’s biggest baseball fans were in attendance (126.1% capacity of the Tokyo Dome according to ESPN.com).
- Although he finished 0-for-4, it was great to see former PawSox and Red Sox outfielder Josh Reddick as Oakland’s Opening Day right fielder. Part of the Andrew Bailey deal, Reddick spent parts of three seasons (2009-11) here in Pawtucket where he hit .243 with 32 home runs and 107 RBIs in 184 games.

- Nick Cafardo of The Boston Globe reports that Daisuke Matsuzaka looked “impressive” in an intrasquad game against Red Sox minor leaguers this afternoon. Dice-K tossed the majority of two innings and looks to be ahead of his rehab schedule. The Sox have “indicated a June 1 return to the major league team is not out of the realm of possibility.” Rob Bradford of WEEI.com reported today via Twitter that Matsuzaka hit 92 mph while landing 18 of 22 pitches for strikes. The righty has been out indefinitely with a sprained elbow.
- Right-handed pitcher Aaron Cook has a good chance of starting the season here in Pawtucket. Mike Antonellis, the “Voice of the Portland Sea Dogs,” reported on Twitter that Cook allowed one run over five innings in a minor league game this afternoon. Cook has spent the past ten seasons with the Colorado Rockies and is the winningest pitcher in the history of Coors Field.
- If you’re crazy about professional soccer, or just want to see something unique, make sure you’re in Boston on July 25th. Fenway Sports Management announced today that Liverpool Football Club will play AS Roma at Fenway Park.
I’ll sign off today with some gratitude: as we approach the end of March, over 6,000 people have read 45 Miles From Fenway this month – an all-time high. Goodbye, Ft. Myers
My first Spring Training was a blast. I saw nine different games, met some terrific people, and learned a lot. I’m timing things right because this morning it’s raining for the first time all week.
Yesterday I went to the PawSox game at the Twins’ facility with my friend Mike Antonellis, the “Voice of the Portland Sea Dogs.” Here are some pics from yesterday’s game.
Former PawSox and Red Sox player, Aaron Bates. Now with the Twins, Aaron was the first player I ever covered to get called up to the big leagues.

Red Sox outfield prospect Alex Hassan playing in his first minor league game since being sent down from big league camp.
Billy Buckner, no relation to Bill Buckner, pitched yesterday for the PawSox. The 28-year-old has appeared in 36 major league games (21 starts) since 2007 with Kansas City and Arizona.
Jeremy Kehrt appeared in seven games (two starts) for the PawSox last year. The righty pitched for Scottsdale in the prospect-driven Arizona Fall League this past off-season.
The PawSox fell to Rochester 6-2 yesterday with Kehrt getting the start, pitching two innings, and suffering the loss. Both of Pawtucket’s runs came on RBI groundouts in the fifth inning. The only real offensive highlight was a sixth-inning triple by J.C. Linares to right-center. The ground shook when he slid into third base.
This will do it for me from beautiful Ft. Myers. Today is a camp day for the PawSox (no games), but tomorrow they’ll host Rochester at 1:00 p.m. EST. My broadcast partner Steve Hyder will be down here for a week starting tomorrow and will have lots of coverage on his blog which can be read here.
