PawSox Roster Moves – August 1, 2012

At around 6:00 Tuesday night while prepping for the broadcast in Rochester, my phone rang with the caller ID displaying “Arnie Beyeler.” Although I’m sure Arnie would’ve loved to chat about his day with me, when I get a call from the PawSox manager an hour before first pitch it can only mean one thing: roster moves.

First the not-so obvious:

  • First baseman Reynaldo Rodriguez has been called-up from Double-A Portland. The 26-year-old Columbian set a Sea Dogs’ franchise record for the most homers in a single month when he went deep ten times in May. At the time of his promotion, the former Yankees’ farmhand was tied for second in the Eastern League in doubles (27), tied for fourth in home runs (16), and tied for ninth in total bases (165).
  • Second baseman Tony Thomas has been activated from the disabled list after suffering a finger injury during batting practice. In 47 games with the PawSox, the former Florida State Seminole is hitting .240 with seven home runs and 21 runs batted in. Thomas has not played since June 26.

Thomas hit a season-high four home runs and five doubles in June when he played in 19 games for the PawSox. (Kelly O’Connor)

  • Right-handed reliever Will Inman was been activated from the disabled list (right forearm strain). In his first season in the Red Sox system, Inman has gone 5-for-5 in save situations and has allowed just 6-of-24 inherited runners to score. Inman has not pitched since July 17.
  • Catcher Carson Blair has been called-up from High-A Salem for the second time (although he’s yet to play in a game with the PawSox). In 36 games with Salem, Blair is batting .210 with one home run and 12 runs batted in.
  • Hard-throwing righty Chris Carpenter has ended his Major League rehab assignment and has been optioned to Pawtucket. Part of the Theo Epstein compensation prior to Spring Training, Carpenter had surgery before the season began to clean up a bone spur around his elbow. On Tuesday night, Carpenter hit 99 mph twice while picking up his second save.
  • Outfielder Alex Hassan has been placed on the disabled list (retroactive to July 28) after suffering a laceration when fouling a pitch off his left shin. The injury required five stitches and forced Hassan to leave the game.

Now the obvious:

  • Lars Anderson was traded late Tuesday afternoon to Cleveland for 27-year-old knuckleballer, Steven Wright. Hear Lars’ reaction to the trade by clicking here.
  • Scott Podsednik was traded with Red Sox reliever Matt Albers to Arizona for Diamondbacks’ lefty, Craig Breslow. The Yale product, and New Haven, Ct. native, pitched for the PawSox in 2006 and ’07, and with Boston in ’06.

Diamondbacks’ manager Kirk Gibson said Tuesday that they have until Thursday to decide if Podsednik will be assigned to Triple-A Reno or the Big League team. (Kelly O’Connor)

  • Ryan Kalish and Clayton Mortensen have both been recalled by Boston. Kalish fills the void of Ryan Sweeney who is reportedly out two months after punching a door. Meanwhile, Mortensen pitched on a rain-shortened Tuesday night in the Red Sox six-inning win over Detroit and picked up his first win in a Boston uniform.

Get all that?

After a 5:00 arrival this morning in Allentown, Pa. where tonight the PawSox start a quick two-game series against the IronPigs, I’m off to a late lunch before going to the ballpark. I’ll talk to you tonight at 6:50.

Recent Roster Moves Strengthen Outfield

In his first rehab start with the PawSox Thursday night, Carl Crawford played five innings and finished 2-for-3 with a run scored and a pair of singles. With all of the focus on the Red Sox outfielder last night, a number of PawSox roster moves were overlooked.

  • Left-hander Will Latimer was assigned back to Double-A Portland where he actually started last night and tossed four innings.
  • Outfielder Jason Repko, who had homered in each of his last two games, has been placed on the disabled list with a hamstring injury.

Kalish has 15 hits and 11 RBI in his first 10 games this year with the PawSox and hit .217 over 18 games with the Red Sox. (Kelly O’Connor)

  • Although the moves sending outfielders Scott Podsednik and Ryan Kalish had officially happened prior to the break, both played in their first game for the PawSox last night.
  • Righty Clayton Mortensen, the 26th man for the Red Sox day-night doubleheader last weekend against the Yankees, was sent back to Pawtucket and pitched Thursday.

After a disappointing loss last night against Buffalo, the PawSox and Bisons play game two this evening with Billy Buckner (1-3, 6.43) getting the start. First pitch is set for 7:05, pre-game coverage begins at 6:50.

Talk with you then.

14 Roster Moves in Seven Days

This has felt much longer than an eight-game homestand. The PawSox have lost 6-of-7 games thus far, have dropped two games by one run (both in extra innings), and have been shutout twice.

As far as player moves go, a lot has changed for the PawSox over the last seven days at McCoy:

  • Ronald Bermudez, who has played in eight games with the PawSox, was placed back on the disabled list with a recurring left hamstring strain.
  • After dominating in Double-A with the Sea Dogs, outfielder J.C. Linares was promoted to Pawtucket and went 4-for-6 with a double in his debut. Since then, he’s been held to one hit over his last five games.
  • Once fully recovered from a left knee injury, outfielder Jason Repko was outrighted to Pawtucket following his rehab.
  • He struck out 20 batters over seven appearances, but following his outing on June 21 at Syracuse, Mark Prior was placed on the disabled list with an oblique strain.

Even at 36-years-old, Podsednik has some spring left in his legs. The outfielder rehabs for the PawSox tonight, batting second and DH’ing. (Kelly O’Connor)

  • To fill Prior’s void in the bullpen, lefty Will Latimer received his first call-up to Triple-A. Unfortunately, he’s been dealt the loss in his two appearances thus far.
  • Aaron Cook was recalled to Boston from his rehab in Pawtucket to start for Clay Buchholz.
  • After two appearances (one start), righty Jeremy Kehrt was assigned back to Portland
  • On the disabled list since May 25, Jose Iglesias (back) was reinstated on Tuesday and has made two starts.
  • Part of the Kevin Youkilis deal with the White Sox, Zach Stewart arrived in Pawtucket and pitched the PawSox to their lone win of the homestand (although Brandon Duckworth more than deserved a win last night).

With a surplus of outfielder, Josh Kroeger was released Thursday by the Red Sox. (Kelly O’Connor).

  • First placed on the temporary inactive list, outfielder Josh Kroeger was released yesterday by the Red Sox. In 64 games with the PawSox, Kroeger hit .244 with nine home runs and 25 RBI.
  • Tony Thomas, who had been playing virtually everyday at second base when Iglesias was on the disabled list, is now on the DL himself with a finger injury suffered during batting practice.
  • After opting out of his contract with Cleveland, Andy LaRoche has been signed by the Red Sox and gets the start at third base tonight. The 28-year-old played 40 games last year with Oakland where he hit .247 with no homers and five RBI. In 46 games this season with Triple-A Columbus, LaRoche hit .234 with five home runs and 16 RBI.
  • Tonight Scott Podsednik bats second and will serve as the PawSox designated hitter as he begins a rehab assignment to heal a groin injury suffered running to first base against the Cubs. In 19 games with Boston, the 36-year-old is hitting .387 with one homer and seven RBI.

Get all that? We’ll see what happens tonight as the PawSox finish the homestand with the Knights, aiming for a series split.

Tazawa, Hassan, and Iglesias Contributing

After soaking in their only off-day of the month, the PawSox are back home tonight where they open up an eight-game homestand against Toledo and Norfolk.

Pawtucket’s 5-3 rain-shortened win Tuesday against the Tides salvaged the recent road trip at 4-4, keeping the PawSox with the top record in the I.L. at 29-18. Their 15 road wins are also the best in the league.

PawSox Notebook:

  • Because he spent time behind Tim Federowicz in Portland and Luis Exposito in Pawtucket, Ryan Lavarnway appeared as the designated hitter in 62-of-133 (47%) games he played in last year. Now a full-time catcher, Lavarnway DH’d for just the second time all year on Tuesday.
  • Junichi Tazawa has surrendered five runs over his last two appearances – all unearned. If you combine his work with Pawtucket and Boston this year, Tazawa has allowed just two earned runs over 25 1/3 innings (0.71 ERA). Since both his earned runs came in the same outing (May 6 at Scranton/Wilkes-Barre), the right-hander has not allowed an earned run in 15-of-16 appearances.

Tazawa has been lights out for the PawSox – and Red Sox – this season. Unfortunately there doesn’t seem to be much room currently in the Red Sox bullpen. (Kelly O’Connor).

  • In his first season in Triple-A, Alex Hassan continues to lead the PawSox in on-base percentage (.373) despite ranking 7th among current batters in hits (29), and 8th in batting average (.234). He’s tied with Lars Anderson for the team-lead in walks (24), and paces all PawSox hitters by getting plunked by four pitches. Hassan lead the entire Red Sox farm system with a .404 OBP last season.
  • After an April batting average of exactly .200 (17-for-85) with one extra-base hit, Jose Iglesias is batting a club-best .360 over his first 18 games in May. He already has four extra-base hits (including his second-career home run), and is the active monthly leader in OBP (.375) and on-base plus slugging (.828).
  • In 22 games with Triple-A Lehigh Valley, former major league All-Star Scott Podsednik was batting a slim .203 with no homers, one extra-base hit, and four RBIs. The Red Sox then purchased his contract from the Phillies and assigned him to Pawtucket. In nine games with the PawSox Podsednik hit .323 with a home run and six RBIs and was called-up the the bigs on Tuesday. Yesterday the “Podfather” played in his first major league game since 2010 and hit a home run for the Sox in Baltimore. Sometimes you just never know what can happen.

The PawSox are not only back home tonight, they’re also back on TV. I’ll be joined by former PawSox and Red Sox reliever Ken Ryan for tonight’s game aired in Rhode Island on the Ocean State Network. Righty Ross Ohlendorf (3-3, 4.64) will be opposed by lefty Adam Wilk (2-3, 2.64). First pitch from McCoy is set for 7:05.

Talk with you then.
