PawSox Roster Moves: July 16, 2012
The PawSox have a variety of roster moves today as they open up a four-game series at McCoy against the Syracuse Chiefs (Nationals):
- Infielder Ryan Dent has been transferred back to Portland. Dent, in his first ever call-up to Triple-A, went 0-for-1 as a pinch hitter.
- Reliever Will Latimer has been received from Portland. The left-hander threw between 90-92 during his recent stay with the PawSox where he went 0-2, 4.50 ERA (4 ER/8.0 IP). His latest outing turned out to be his first career start, allowing one run over four innings on July 12 with the Sea Dogs. Before then, Latimer had made 123 career minor league appearances – all in relief.
- After being optioned to make room in Boston for Clay Buchholz, Mauro Gomez is at McCoy and tonight hits fourth and plays first base.
- Chris Carpenter has been added to the PawSox roster as he continues his 30-day rehab assignment (bone spurs). More on Carpenter by clicking here.

Recent Roster Moves Strengthen Outfield
In his first rehab start with the PawSox Thursday night, Carl Crawford played five innings and finished 2-for-3 with a run scored and a pair of singles. With all of the focus on the Red Sox outfielder last night, a number of PawSox roster moves were overlooked.
- Left-hander Will Latimer was assigned back to Double-A Portland where he actually started last night and tossed four innings.
- Outfielder Jason Repko, who had homered in each of his last two games, has been placed on the disabled list with a hamstring injury.
Kalish has 15 hits and 11 RBI in his first 10 games this year with the PawSox and hit .217 over 18 games with the Red Sox. (Kelly O’Connor)
- Although the moves sending outfielders Scott Podsednik and Ryan Kalish had officially happened prior to the break, both played in their first game for the PawSox last night.
- Righty Clayton Mortensen, the 26th man for the Red Sox day-night doubleheader last weekend against the Yankees, was sent back to Pawtucket and pitched Thursday.
After a disappointing loss last night against Buffalo, the PawSox and Bisons play game two this evening with Billy Buckner (1-3, 6.43) getting the start. First pitch is set for 7:05, pre-game coverage begins at 6:50.

14 Roster Moves in Seven Days
This has felt much longer than an eight-game homestand. The PawSox have lost 6-of-7 games thus far, have dropped two games by one run (both in extra innings), and have been shutout twice.
As far as player moves go, a lot has changed for the PawSox over the last seven days at McCoy:
- Ronald Bermudez, who has played in eight games with the PawSox, was placed back on the disabled list with a recurring left hamstring strain.
- After dominating in Double-A with the Sea Dogs, outfielder J.C. Linares was promoted to Pawtucket and went 4-for-6 with a double in his debut. Since then, he’s been held to one hit over his last five games.
- Once fully recovered from a left knee injury, outfielder Jason Repko was outrighted to Pawtucket following his rehab.
- He struck out 20 batters over seven appearances, but following his outing on June 21 at Syracuse, Mark Prior was placed on the disabled list with an oblique strain.

- To fill Prior’s void in the bullpen, lefty Will Latimer received his first call-up to Triple-A. Unfortunately, he’s been dealt the loss in his two appearances thus far.
- Aaron Cook was recalled to Boston from his rehab in Pawtucket to start for Clay Buchholz.
- After two appearances (one start), righty Jeremy Kehrt was assigned back to Portland
- On the disabled list since May 25, Jose Iglesias (back) was reinstated on Tuesday and has made two starts.
- Part of the Kevin Youkilis deal with the White Sox, Zach Stewart arrived in Pawtucket and pitched the PawSox to their lone win of the homestand (although Brandon Duckworth more than deserved a win last night).
With a surplus of outfielder, Josh Kroeger was released Thursday by the Red Sox. (Kelly O’Connor).
- First placed on the temporary inactive list, outfielder Josh Kroeger was released yesterday by the Red Sox. In 64 games with the PawSox, Kroeger hit .244 with nine home runs and 25 RBI.
- Tony Thomas, who had been playing virtually everyday at second base when Iglesias was on the disabled list, is now on the DL himself with a finger injury suffered during batting practice.
- After opting out of his contract with Cleveland, Andy LaRoche has been signed by the Red Sox and gets the start at third base tonight. The 28-year-old played 40 games last year with Oakland where he hit .247 with no homers and five RBI. In 46 games this season with Triple-A Columbus, LaRoche hit .234 with five home runs and 16 RBI.
- Tonight Scott Podsednik bats second and will serve as the PawSox designated hitter as he begins a rehab assignment to heal a groin injury suffered running to first base against the Cubs. In 19 games with Boston, the 36-year-old is hitting .387 with one homer and seven RBI.
Get all that? We’ll see what happens tonight as the PawSox finish the homestand with the Knights, aiming for a series split.

T-Minus 72 Hours
It has finally hit me that Opening Day is now just 72 hours away. Everyone has been working overtime at McCoy Stadium getting ready for Thursday’s 7:05 first pitch against Buffalo, even our manager, Arnie Beyeler.
Arnie, who just arrived from Ft. Myers, was inside our offices today participating in a live Q&A on Boston.com where fans asked him every question under the sun about the PawSox. At this time we don’t have any definitive word on what our roster will will be. As soon as the Red Sox release our roster I’ll be sure to post it here ASAP. In the meantime, Mike Andrews of SoxProspects.com reported via Twitter (@MikeAndrewsSP) that outfield prospect Alex Hassan has been assigned to Pawtucket. He also reported the following moves:
- Matt Barnes, 2011 first round pick, assigned to Single-A Greenville
- Blake Swihart, 2011 first round pick, assigned to Single-A Greenville
- Xander Bogaerts, Baseball America’s No. 2 Red Sox prospect, assigned to High-A Salem.
- Heiker Meneses, infielder, assigned to Double-A Portland
- Aaor Kurcz, Jayson Hernandez, Will Latimer, and Caleb Clay assigned to Double-A Portland
- Mitch Dening, Jorge Padron, Drew Dominguez, and Josue Peley released by Boston.
Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe has reported that through five innings today, Aaron Cook has the following line: 2-H/1-R/1-ER/1-BB/2-K and 11 groundball outs. You can follow Pete’s live updates throughout the Red Sox vs. Nationals game on the Extra Bases Blog.
There’s a strong chance that Cook opens the season in Pawtucket before seeing time in the Big Leagues with the Red Sox. It’s important to remember that Cook has an “opt out” in his minor league contract on May 1. This could pressure Boston to call him up to Fenway before then since he has proven in Spring Training that he can get batters out.
Between getting ready for Opening Day, finalizing my taxes, and getting my couch ready for tonight’s NCAA Championship Game, there’s lots to do! I’ll leave you with a 2007 head shot of a former International League standout who is on the verge of signing a $200 million contract extension.
